Elwood Hopkins, Managing Director

Elwood HopkinsElwood Hopkins is an urban planner. Elwood heads two organizations: He is Managing Director of Emerging Markets, Inc. a private consulting firm that helps financial institutions and supermarkets to develop business strategies in disinvested urban areas; and he is President of the Emerging Markets Development Corporation. In the past decade, Emerging Markets, Inc. and the Center for Place-Based Initiatives have worked with Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Wachovia, Capital One, Union Bank, Prudential Financial, Washington Mutual, Citibank, and JP Morgan Chase.

Previously, Elwood has served as a Research Scientist at the New York University Urban Research Center and has conducted extensive fieldwork in Bombay, Calcutta, Delhi, Bangkok, Jakarta, Tokyo, Istanbul, Cairo, Nairobi, Lagos, Rio de Janeiro, and Mexico City. He has served as an Advisor to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Habitat (UNCHS), Organization of American States, and the World Bank. He was a contributor to the World Summit on Cities, UN Social Summit, and the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). He has also served as Executive Director of Los Angeles Urban Funders. He has been a member or contributor to the Harvard Executive Session on Philanthropy, Chapin Hall Center for Children at the University of Chicago, and Aspen Institute Roundtable on Comprehensive Community Change. He is the author of Collaborative Philanthropies (Rowman and Littlefield, 2005). In 2007, he received the Robert McNeely Trailblazer Award; and in 2009, the Champions for Families Award.

Azusena Favela, Consultant

Azusena Favela focuses primarily on leading Emerging Markets’ efforts with local food retail operators and increasing access to healthy foods in underserved communities. She joins Emerging Markets with extensive experience in capacity building and leadership development through her work with First 5 LA’s Best Start initiative. She has also led asset development strategies in her native community of Vernon-Central in South Central Los Angeles. Her niche is working in low-income communities, specifically with the immigrant and out of school, out of work young adult populations. She currently serves on the South Central Neighborhood Council. She holds a Master’s degree in Community Economic Development from Southern New Hampshire University and Bachelor degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Mehmet Berker, Consultant

Mehmet BerkerMehmet Berker is a cartographer, GIS analyst, and graphic designer who uses traditional GIS software as well as graphic design software to create maps which seek to be informative as well as beautiful. In addition to making maps for the Emerging Markets Development Corporation and Emerging Markets, Inc., he also assists in research, and serves as project manager. Mehmet previously worked for Ramsey County, Minnesota where he helped create Go Ramsey Communities, a webmap for residents to search and discover all public parks and recreational facilities in the county. He has also worked at a public policy think tank and the U.S. Senate. Mehmet is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, where he spent most of his time tinkering in the Masters of GIS computer lab, and learning the finer points of cartographic design.
