Emerging Markets, Inc. worked with The University of Southern California’s Center on Philanthropy and Public Policy, and the Sol Price Center for Social Innovation to convene Prioritizing Place, a national forum on the field of place-based initiatives, which also represented the culmination of a year-long inquiry into the state of the field undertaken by the two centers in 2014.
Emerging Markets, Inc. reached out to thought-leaders throughout the country to assemble a diverse group of participants to be part of a series of five discussion groups. These discussion sessions were held in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. Each discussion session focused on a different aspect of place-based initiatives. The discussions were compiled into a monograph along with response essays from a number of discussion group participants and other thinkers and practitioners working in the field of place-based initiatives called, “Moving to Higher Ground.”

The results of the discussion led to the Prioritizing Place forum itself, which was held in December of 2014 at USC and attracted a large number of some of the top practitioners working in philanthropy, government, and the private sector conducting place-based initiatives today. The forum consisted of three plenary sessions and numerous breakout sessions which engaged participants on a wide-range of issues facing practitioners today, as well as keynotes from leaders in the field. Keynote speakers included Dr. Robert K. Ross, President & CEO of The California Endowment; John Barros, Chief of Ecenomic Development for the City of Boston; Andrew Plepler, Global Corporate Responsibility Executive for Bank of America; and Henry Cisneros, former Secretary of Housing & Urban Development, and current Executive Chairman of CityView.
